Steve

You must complete an adoption application with WBCR before we will consider you for one of our Border Collies (under the “adoption” link). Then go to our PayPal link to pay the $15.00 application fee. One of our volunteers will check your references, and then another will come to your home to meet you & your family in person before the board will vote on your application. If you are approved, we will arrange a time for you to meet the dog(s) you are interested in. If you decide he/she is perfect for you and the board agrees, we will schedule a day for you to pick up your Border Collie, sign adoption paperwork, and pay the $350 minimum adoption donation. This whole process may take a month or more, as all WBCR members are volunteers and we’re committed to making a perfect match for our border collies. Thanks for your patience!

(5 month old male, Caledonia, WI)

June 1, 2022

Steve is a four month old neutered male Border Collie. He was given to a local shelter by his kind senior citizen owners who had purchased him as a replacement for their dog who died suddenly.  They realized quickly that they were not an appropriate home for a young active Border Collie puppy. Luckily the shelter contacted us to help find Steve a forever home that is prepared for the work and time involved in raising a Border Collie.
Sweet Steve is a bit shy when you first meet him but he warms up very quickly and once he knows you he is very glad to see you again.  He is food motivated and has a typical Border Collie brain.  He learns quickly (good things and bad) so he does need a home that is committed to spending time exercising his body and his mind.
Because he came into rescue from a shelter, we started from scratch on housebreaking. Steve quickly learned to go potty on demand and as long as we get him out regularly, he doesn’t have any accidents.  He is wonderful in his crate and sleep through the night without a peep.
Steve is living in a foster home with four other dogs and enjoys playing with and running with them.  He seems pretty smart about reading “dog language” and keeps appropriate distance from our crabby older female Border Collie who deals with other dogs on her terms.
Steve ignored our cats at first but now has shown some interest in them. will keep an eye on this but hope that we will fairly easily teach him that cats are friends and they are off limits for chasing.
The goats do hold his attention but he is mostly able to be redirected when he is at the fence staring at them.  Has recall is pretty good and he has learned that there is normally a tasty treat for dogs that respond quickly to their name. Steve has gotten sit down pretty well too but is still working on down.
Steve does get car sick so we are working on that.  It’s possible he will outgrow this as he becomes older but if not it is easily treated with over the counter medication. He rides quietly and willingly gets in the car but does drool.
Our handsome guy Steve will be available for adoption in about 3 weeks.  WBCR generally keeps dogs in rescue for 4 weeks before adopting them out so that we can evaluate them and do our best to know what the best match for them will be.  Please fill out an application if you are interested in being considered to adopt Steve.
